Shh, this one's about the strongest piece — the queen! Know her secret? She can simply do everything at once: she moves in straight lines like a rook AND along diagonals like a bishop. Any direction, as many squares as she likes. When I found that out, I spent a week dreaming of reaching the last rank and turning into a queen. But with power comes responsibility: losing your queen to a blunder is the most painful beginner mistake — take care of her!
The queen on a1 is bored in the corner, and strong pieces have no business in corners — you can see the fewest squares from there. Bring her out to the centre, to d4! From the centre the queen sweeps the board in all eight directions at once. Look: a diagonal leads from a1 to d4 — the fastest route.
